As
previous said, Ilha Grande is majority jungle; probably 95%. So what better way to spend a day with an
absolute corker of a hangover than to go for - what we believed to be - a
walk...
Having stirred at around 8am it was clear from the off that this was not going to be a fun start to the day. At breakfast one of the girls asked that rhetorical question of: 'did we really need those couple of beers when we got back to the hostel?'... Of course we did!! But in hindsight, probably shouldn't have.
Then Kate pipes up: 'let's go for a walk along one of those trials and try to find the waterfall'; because we wouldn't be wet enough from the rain. So we got rough directions from Nijah and off we set; managing to rope in Julie and Annabel on the way.
Before the story continues, it does need to be pointed out that although a lot of this may come across negatively, this was quite possibly the most fun that I've had so far on this trip!!
Ok, continue... The four of us decided that the most sensible footwear for a trek through the jungle would be Havaianas and I still think that if this was not the choice, the experience would not have been as memorable. Cue the next 3 hours of walking along muddy, slippery clay, rain still in the air, shear drop-offs right next to the path and the four of us laughing our heads off while trying to keep balance by grabbing onto any bush, tree, twig, rock that could be reached. In the whole time we were out, Annabel was the only one of us the slip over properly; and so happened to be in the flattest piece of ground that we'd probably walked on.
The walk however was definitely worth it!! We were following scribbled signed that we're informing us that the waterfall was 10 minutes away and following another 45 minutes we could hear the sound old cascading water!! After cooling down a bit at taking in the views a guy who was there informed us of a really nice beach about 10 minutes away; 'just turn left and walk' were the directions... I almost could hear the laughter from him bellowing through the trees when we set of, as the next hour and half involved a lot of downhill slipping and sliding, grabbing into trees and just trying to stay on our feet. Eventually there was only one course of action; flip-flops off!! A little more stability, but not a lot...
By the time the beach was in sight all we wanted to do was crash out with an ice-cold Cervejas; so we got a boat back the main beach, hit the supermarket to buy some food to cook on the night and a couple of packs of beer as a reward for all the hard graft put into today's events!!
You won't be surprised to hear that due to the immense hangover and aching, all Kate and I could stomach was a day chilling on the beach, following by a massive and incredible kebab!!
#winning!!!
